You Can Get Salmonella Infections from Reptiles

INTRO——
HI I’M ALEX FARNHAM AND THIS IS ANIMALIST NEWS.
MOST PEOPLE ASSOCIATE SALMONELLA WITH UNDERCOOKED FOOD AND POULTRY, HOWEVER, A BIGGER THREAT
LOOMS IN HOUSEHOLDS ALL ACROSS THE WORLD- REPTILES.
WHILE SNAKES AND TURTLES MAY LOOK FRIENDLY, AN ESTIMATED NINETY PERCENT OF ALL REPTILES
CARRY SALMONELLA BACTERIA AS AN INTESTINAL INFECTION.
THESE MICROBES ARE THEN SPREAD THROUGHOUT THEIR HABITATS WHERE NEARLY SEVENTY THOUSAND
AMERICANS ACQUIRE A SALMONELLA INFECTION EACH YEAR.
IN 2003, THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL FOUND THAT ONLY FIVE AMERICAN STATES REQUIRED PET
STORES TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT SALMONELLA TO CUSTOMERS.
SINCE THEN, TURTLES WITH SHELLS SMALLER THAN FOUR INCHES HAVE BEEN BLAMED FOR NUMEROUS
OUTBREAKS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY ARE MORE COMMONLY ADOPTED THAN LARGER TURTLES AND CARRY
SIX TYPES OF SALMONELLA. ALTHOUGH THE SALE OF THESE SMALL TURTLES WAS
BANNED IN 1975 DUE TO OVER TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND RELATED SALMONELLA CASES, PEOPLE HAVE CONTINUED
TO BUY AND SELL THE ANIMALS. UNFORTUNATELY, ABOUT SEVENTY PERCENT OF THIS
TURTLE’S VICTIMS ARE UNDER THE AGE OF TEN, AND ONE THIRD OF THOSE ARE UNDER ONE YEAR
OLD. BECAUSE OF THEIR SEVERE VULNERABILITY TO BACTERIAL
INFECTIONS, THE CDC URGES FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN TO STAY AWAY FROM REPTILES.
SALMONELLA INFECTIONS CAN BE SPREAD THROUGH FECES, SALIVA, OR BY JUST SIMPLY TOUCHING
AN INFECTED SURFACE. WHAT’S EVEN WORSE IS THAT MANY OF THESE
BACTERIAS ARE ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT AND CAN EVEN BECOME FATAL IF NOT TREATED.
THIS MIGHT BE WHY ONLY THREE PERCENT OF PET OWNING AMERICANS HAVE A REPTILE.
WOULD THIS INFORMATION STOP YOU FROM OWNING A REPTILE?
LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW. THAT’S ALL FOR TODAY’S EPISODE.

  5. Wolf Dragon says:

Guys this study was mainly about small children, the age that will put their hands in their mouth constantly and don't fully understand personal hygiene

Just wash your hands after handling your pet and clean surfaces your pet has been on and you'll be fine

  6. musicwithkelsey says:

This is so ridiculous, it just gives reptiles a worse name than they already have. Keep your enclosures clean, wash your hands and you'll be fine. I have 11 reptiles currently and will continue getting more. How are you going to get salmonella? Somehow consuming their feces, if you don't do that you're good

  7. Izzy Brenner says:

I adopted Kisa (my ball python) a year ago. I kiss her and cuddle her everytime I handle her. I want to know what exactly causes some reptiles pass on samonella and some don't. is it possible that proper care and hygiene is a reason why most reptile owners don't get samonella? (washing hands, cleaning terrariums)

THIS IS EXAGGERATED!!!!!!!!!!! They say that the most common source of salmonella comes from reptiles. LIES!!!!! I searched it up on google and it said (researched by Mayo Clinic) that salmonella comes from contaminated water and food. They didn't even say a WORD about it coming from reptiles. You guys (animalist) are no animal experts.

  22. stefanos tokatlidis says:

This is a blatant exaggeration. Reptiles are among the safest animals. You just wash your hands after handling them and you teach children to do the same. I had reptiles for many years and I am very healthy, likewise other friends that keep reptiles I know. A lot of people have children and reptiles together with no problems.
