Pet Of The Week: Nate’s Reptile Rescue

OF GO PERKS. WE’LL SEE. THE HOODIE WITH THE BIG POCKETS. THAT’S PERFECT. WELL, IT IS TIME RIGHT NOW FOR OUR PTL ADOPT ME SEGMENT. EVERY MONDAY, WE WORK WITH LOCAL SHELTERS TO HELP FIND FOREVER HOMES FOR PETS. WE’VE HAD DOGS, CATS, BIRDS. BUT THIS TIME IT’S LITTLE DIFFERENT. WE HAVE REPTILES. OH, BOY. HERE FROM NATE’S REPTILE RESCUE IS NATHAN LASCOT. HE’S BROUGHT ALONG SOME FRIEND HERE. NOTICE HOW I’M CLOSER. I’M HAPPY THAT MIKEY IS IN THE MIDDLE HERE. THIS REPTILE IS BEAUTIFUL. LIKE, THE COLOR IS WONDERFUL. TELL US WHAT THIS IS AND WHO THIS IS. THIS IS A GREEN IGUANA. WE GOT FOUR OF THEM IN ON SATURDAY. THEY RANGE FROM A DEEP BLUE YOU CAN KIND OF SEE TO A DEEP RED. THIS ONE IS GREEN. SHE CAME IN WITH FOUR SIBLINGS. THEY WERE LEFT BEHIND FROM A PREVIOUS OWNER WITH A FRIEND, AND THEN THEY HAD CONTACTED US, AND SAID WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR THESE IGUANAS, SO IF YOU CAN TAKE THEM IN, FIND A GOOD HOME. THAT’S WHERE I WAS CONFUSED. YOU RESCUE THESE REPTILES FROM HOMES ACROSS THE CITY. YES. THEY’RE NOT JUST RANDOMLY WAND, THE STREETS. I WOULD IMAGINE YOUR RESCUE IN PARTICULAR HAS A REAL NEED, BECAUSE PEOPLE GET AN ANIMAL LIKE THIS, MAYBE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY’RE GETTING INTO, AND THEY DON’T WANT IT ANYMORE, OR MOVE ON IN A DIFFERENT WAY AND LEAVE IT BEHIND. ABSOLUTELY. YOU HAVE A LOT OF BUSINESS, I GUESS. WE’VE RESCUED ABOUT 365 ANIMALS AS OF SATURDAY. SO WE WERE VERY, VERY BUSY WITH THE AMOUNT OF REPTILES WE GET PER MONTH. SOMETIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET THEM OUT. WHO IS THIS? HE’S EYEING US HERE. HERE WE HAVE A COIN SNAKE. YOU’RE GOING TO PUT HIM BACK. I LOVED HIS EYES. IT WAS LIKE HE WAS WATCHING US. HE WAS WATCHING US. HE UNWHAT WE WERE SAYING SOMEHOW. I KIND OF LIKE HIM. NOW, THIS ONE, I HAVE TO SAY, NAY THAN, MAKES ME A LITTLE NERVOUS. IT’S, LIKE, RED. IT LOOKS A LITTLE DANGEROUS. DOES THIS THING BITE? NO. NOTHING WE BROUGHT WITH US BYTES. BYTES. . MIKEY, YOU’RE BRAVE. I AM. IT’S REALLY SMOOTH. THEY’RE A LOT SOFTER THAN PEOPLE THINK. THEY’RE NOT SCALEY OR SLIMY. AND THESE ARE — THIS SNAKE IS PRETTY MUCH ALL MUSCLE. I CAN FEEL THE STRENGTH IN IT. YEAH. THIS IS NOT A POISONOUS SNAKE. NO, THIS IS NOT A POISONOUS SNAKE. I SEE IT STICKING ITS TONGUE OUT. IT’S JUST SMELLING THE ENVIRONMENT. IT’S NOT USED TO THE SMELLS. JUST LIKE — MOST PEOPLE KNOW THEY HAVE A FORKED TONGUE, SO ANYTHING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TONGUE GETS THAT. THE RIGHT SIDE, THE TONGUE CAN SENSE THAT. THIS IS A COLD-BLOODED ANIMAL, CORRECT? YES. IT CAN’T HEAT ITSELF UP, SO THAT’S WHY SOMETIMES YOU SEE SNAKES BASKING IN THE SUN? WHEN PEOPLE SEE THEM IN THEIR YARDS, THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO GET WARM. SHE’S A LITTLE COLD, BECAUSE SHE’S BEEN OUT OF HER HEAT LAMP FOR AWHILE NOW. BEFORE WE RUN OUT OF TIME, YOU HAVE ONE OTHER ITEM OVER HERE, ANOTHER ANIMAL. IT’S AN ANIMAL. LET’S SECURE THAT NICE AND TIGHT. . AND IN FACT, YOU’RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO DEPARTMENT THESE ANIMALS, OR IN THE CASE OF THE SNAKE, A FOSTER HOME? YEAH. FOSTER HOMES. HOW BEAUTIFUL. LOOK AT THE COLORS IN THAT. WHAT IS THIS, NATHAN? THIS IS A VEILED CHAMELEON. DID IT ADAPT THE COLOR OF THE BASKET LID? IT DID NOT. THIS IS ITS NATURAL COLORS. IT IS A MYTH CHAMELEONS BLEND INTO THEIR ENVIRONMENT. IT’S BASED ON TEMPERATURE AND MOOD. WE WERE CONCERNED WE COUNTRY SEE THE CAW MIDDLE SCHOOLON, IT WOULD DISAPPEAR INTO THE STUDIO. NATHAN IS HERE TO SET US STRAIGHT. SO IF ANYONE’S INTERESTED IN ADOPTING THESE ANIMALS, THEY CAN CONTACT YOU, AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A LINK TO YOUR WEB SITE ON OUR WEB SITE. WE’LL TELL THEM ABOUT THAT. YOU ALSO HAVE SOME EVENTS COMING UP. WE HAVE A COME OF PUBLIC APPEARANCES AND PRIVATE EVENTS. WE ARE DOING BIRTHDAY PARTS TO EDUCATE CHILDREN AND GET OUT OF THE MYTH SOME PEOPLE TELL THEM, INTRODUCE THEM TO REPTILES. YOU CAN BRING THIS LITTLE GUY TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY. YES. I LOVE HIM. LOOK, HE’S HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE. WHO ARE YOU? THAT’S MIKEY. YES. WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BRINGING THESE. THANK YOU. IT’S REALLY FASCINATING. WELL, THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON HOW YOU CAN ADOPT, WE HAVE A LINK TO NATE’S REPTILE RESCUE ON OUR WEB SITE, PITTSBURGHTODAYLIVE.COM.
