A tiger who starred in adverts for petrol
giant Esso has been saved from being put down following a campaign by a British wildlife
park. Eighteen-year-old Tango and his partner Julia were set to be euthanised in Belgium
before keepers at the Woodside Wildlife and Falconry Park in Lincolnshire stepped in.
After Tango starred in adverts for Esso, whose slogan was ‘Put a tiger in your tank’, the
pair were moved to a circus in Germany, where they are believed to have been mistreated.
They were seized from the circus last year before keepers at Woodside were alerted to
their plight. ‘They are doing really well. They’ve had a long journey and just like us
humans, they get tired, so they went straight to bed when they got here,’ said Woodside
director Neil Mumby. ‘There are no other tigers in Lincolnshire on view to the public. It’s
great for the people of Lincolnshire to be able to come and learn about them. ‘Tango
is one of the Esso tigers so he’s a TV star who has come here to enjoy his retirement.
He would have been one of many tigers to be used in the adverts.’ It has taken more than
six months of cross-border bureaucratic wrangling and £250,000 (US $414,450) to bring the two
tigers to England.
