HE IS BREAKING DOWN A TOPIC EACH WEEK AND TODAY WE’RE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT PROBABLY A LOT OF US ARE GUILTY OF, A POOR DIET. WHAT CAN A POOR DIET LEAD TO, YOU BE FORTUNATELY NOT GREAT DR. KALANI BRADY JOINS US TO TALK ABOUT IT. GOOD MORNING, DR. BRADY. GOOD MORNING. THE HEALTH ISSUE WE’RE BREAKING DOWN TODAY IS A POOR DIET. I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GUILTY OF LEADING LIVES WITH POOR DIETS. WHAT CAN A POOR DIET LEAD TO? WE’LL TAKE IT BY THE AGE. SO I WON’T GO INTO INFANTS BECAUSE OF COURSE WITH INFANTS THE BEST DIET IS MOTHER’S MILK AND BREAST FEEDING IS VERY HELPFUL FOR ALL KINDS OF REASONS, IMMUNE SYSTEM, PROPER GROWTH, ADEQUATE CALCIUM AND SO WE’LL LEAVE THAT, BUT WE’LL GO TO TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOL. PEOPLE THINK, OH, JUICE, THAT’S HEALTHY. FRUITS ARE HEALTHY BECAUSE OF THE BULK, BUT JUICE RARELY HAS THE AMOUNT OF FRUIT IN IT THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO HAVE IN A HEALTHY DIET. SO TOO MUCH JUICE IS A POOR DIET FOR TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS. IN ADDITION TO THAT, SWEETENED BEVERAGES ARE REALLY NOT GOOD. SOME PEOPLE SAY, OH, YOU USE DIET COKE AND YOU USE DIET PEPSI, DIET DRINKS ARE DANGEROUS. I HAVE NOT READ ANY LITERATURE IN THE MEDICAL LITERATURE THAT DANGEROUS IN ANY WAY, BUT REGULAR SUGAR-SWEETENED BEVERAGES ARE DEFINITELY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY WHEN PUT IN A BOTTLE WHEN THE TODDLER GOES DOWN FOR SLEEP. THAT CAN BE BAD BECAUSE IT LEADS TO DENTAL CARRIES, CAVITIES. AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY, THAT DIET DRINKS ARE BAD, SOMETHING ABOUT THE ASPARTAME. SO THAT’S NOT TRUE THEN. THERE ARE NO STUDIES THAT SHOW IT’S BAD. GOOD TO KNOW. THERE’S A HUGE HOCUS POCUS AMOUNT OF FACTS THAT HAVEN’T BEEN VERIFIED THAT THEY ARE DANGEROUS BUT THERE’S NO STUDY THAT SHOWS THAT THEY ARE DANGEROUS. GOOD TO KNOW. AND WHAT ABOUT THE LATER AGES? YES, SCHOOL AGE. THE THINGS TO SALTY SNACKS. MY FAVORITE. AGAIN, SWEETENED BEVERAGES. OKAY. SUGAR FOODS AND COOKIES. THOSE KIND OF THINGS A TO A LOT OF CALORIE LOADING AND TO OBESITY. AS YOU KNOW WE’RE IN AN EPIDEMIC OF OBESITY IN SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN WHICH WE NEVER HAD BEFORE. AND I THINK WITH THAT TOO, AND I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS ACCURATE, YOU CAN CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG, I FEEL LIKE SO MANY TIMES, OH, THEY ARE A KID, THEY WON’T HAVE ANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS, WHEN THEY GROW, THEY WILL GROW OUT OF IT. THERE’S AN EPIDEMIC OF TYPE TWO DIABETES BECAUSE OF OVERWEIGHT IN CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS. YOU CAN’T USE THE EXCUSE OF OH, THEY WILL GROW OUT OF IT OR THEY BE IMPACTING THEM. RIGHT. ANOTHER THING IS YOU ALSO LEARN THE HABITS YOUNG. THAT’S WHAT WE TALK ABOUT. THAT’S IMPORTANT, MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE IMMEDIATE DETRIMENT OF USING THE BAD FOODS. AS YOU GET EVEN OLDER WHAT ARE THE POOR DIETS FOR THE OLDER AGES? WELL, THAT WOULD BE US. HEY, ALL RIGHT. I’LL TAKE IT. WE’RE OLDER, WE’RE ADULTS. MAN. OBVIOUSLY AVOIDING TOO MANY SIMPLE CASH HIGH DRIETS. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A MARINE AND AVOID ALL SWEETS, BUT SWEETS, DESSERTS, ICE CREAM, HIGH CALORIE FOODS CANNOT ONLY ADD THE CALORIES BUT THEY ARE BAD FOR A NUMBER OF OTHER REASONS. FROM AGE OF SCHOOL ON INTO ADULTHOOD SHOULD BE THE MANTRA THAT WE FOLLOW. LAST NIGHT MY DINNER, THANKS TO MY WIFE, WAS CHOY SUM AND BAKED POTATO. NO MEATS. I EAT MEETS AT THE MEALS EARLIER BUT DURING THE WEEK IT’S VEGETABLES. SHE HAS YOU ON A STRICT DIET. FOR GOOD REASON, I’M OVERWEIGHT. SLIM LITTLE CHANGES RIGHT RNCHTS I LIKE TO PRETEND I’M NOT AN ADULT AND MY METABOLISM ISN’T SLOWING. COMPLEX CARBS. THOSE ARE THE TASTIEST. IF YOU’RE GOING TO EAT FRENCH FRIES, EAT SWEET POTATO FRENCH FRIES. SWEET POTATOES ARE HEALTHY, THE BROWN RICE,. AND THAT’S ANOTHER THING. THERE ARE DELICIOUS ALTERNATIVES THAT ARE A LITTLE BIT HEALTHIER. SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW FOR YOUR DIFFERENT AGE GROUP WHAT A POOR DIET WILL LEAD TO. FOR KEIKI IT MATTERS AS WELL. DIFFERENT AGES HAVE DIFFERENT POOR DIET
